Otoplasty
Otoplasty - Indication
Otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping or ear pinning surgery, is indicated for individuals seeking to address aesthetic concerns related to the shape, size, or position of their ears.
Hospital stay
The patient can go home the same day.
Surgical technique
With a hidden posterior incision, the surgeon will reshape the cartilage and reposition the ear closer to the skull.
Post-operative care
A compressive dressing then a headband to hold the ears during 1 month after the surgery.
Time
Around 1 hours under local or general anesthesia
Sports / Daily life
The patient should avoid lifting weights, including children, for one month. Normal sedentary activities can be resumed on the day of the surgery.
What is a otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping or ear pinning surgery, is indicated for individuals seeking to address aesthetic concerns related to the shape, size, or position of their ears. This procedure is commonly chosen to correct prominent or protruding ears, asymmetry between the ears, or other ear-related cosmetic issues. Otoplasty can help individuals achieve a more balanced and harmonious facial appearance by reshaping and repositioning the ears to their desired aesthetic outcome.
Where are the otoplasty scar?
It's a scar hidden behind the ear
Can we do the otoplasty surgery under local anesthesia?
Yes, like the facelift procedure can indeed be performed under local anesthesia, eliminating the potential risks associated with general anesthesia. To achieve this, a combination of local anesthetic products is used to provide an extended numbing effect. During the procedure, the patient remains awake, similar to a dental procedure, but they do not experience any pain, ensuring a comfortable and safe surgical experience.
At what age can we perform an otoplasty?
Otoplasty, a surgical procedure to reshape the ears, is commonly performed on children and adults. The ideal age for children is typically around 5 to 6 years, when the ears have reached most of their adult size and the cartilage is mature enough for correction. Performing the surgery at this age can help prevent psychological distress associated with ear-related teasing in school. For adolescents and adults, there is no upper age limit for otoplasty; suitability is more dependent on overall health and healing capability rather than age.
When can I resume sport activities?
It's important for patients to understand that the recovery period can vary, and returning to physical activity should be a gradual process. Typically, light activities, such as walking, can be resumed within a few days post-surgery, aiding circulation and recovery. However, it's crucial to avoid strenuous activities, especially those that involve the chest muscles like weight lifting for at least four to six weeks. This allows the implants to properly settle and the incision sites to heal. High-impact activities, such as running or jumping, should be reintroduced slowly and only after one month after the surgery.
What are the risks of an otoplasty?
Otoplasty, while generally a safe procedure, carries certain risks and complications. These include infection, which can typically be treated with antibiotics, and scarring, although scars are usually well-hidden behind the ear. Patients might experience asymmetry, temporary changes in skin sensation, or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic results. Overcorrection or undercorrection may necessitate revision surgery. Like all surgeries, there's a risk of bleeding and hematoma formation. Anesthesia risks, such as allergic reactions or breathing difficulties, are also present. Postoperative pain and discomfort are common but manageable.
